Amsterdam stands in the centre of the Netherlands an is a compact city, with a population of more than 700,000. Full of superb museums and galleries, much of central Amsterdam is based around the city's main canal, which features regular boat trips and is spanned by a number of historic bridges. Amsterdam city centre is easy to walk around and also contains many popular cycle lanes along the main roads.

In the heart of Amsterdam you will find Dam Square, an important part of city life, while a little to the south, the Vincent Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum are amongst the top attractions. Slightly to the north of central Amsterdam, the red light district is one of the city's most famous regions, featuring numerous hash cafés, massage parlours and venues offering live entertainment.

On the western side of Amsterdam, the trendy and lively district of Jordaan features an array of shops, restaurants and places to visit. Standing to the east of Dam Square are several important areas of greens and the bustling Rembrandts Plein entertainment region, together with further theatres and museums.
